Over the centuries, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges has been the scene of many historic events, including military conflicts linked to the wars between France and the Holy Roman Empire. The Le Corbusier site at Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, also known as the “Maisons Jaoul”, is a complex of two houses in the Vosges region of France. Designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, this site is famous for its innovative architecture and its contribution to the modern movement in architecture. These two houses, built between 1954 and 1956, are considered emblematic examples of Le Corbusier’s work. They embody the principles of modern architecture, with their bold use of raw concrete, functional spatial planning and harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape.
The Site Le Corbusier de Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is part of the transnational dossier “The architectural work of Le Corbusier, an exceptional contribution to the Modern Movement”, which comprises 17 sites in seven countries and was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2016.
Nature and hiking in Saint Dié les Vosges
Saint Dié les Vosges offers a wide range of hikes at different levels, accessible to both beginners and experienced walkers. The ” Kemberg massif ” hike is a very pleasant half-day outing for the whole family. Explore this 6 km route (approx. 2h30 with a 300 m gradient), mostly shaded by fir trees.
Admire the views of the town of Saint Dié, the Saint-Martin rock and the Kiosque rock. The starting point is at the top of rue de l’Hermitage. You can park in the cul-de-sac on your right. More experienced hikers will appreciate the “Five Rocks of Kemberg” circuit, departing from Saint Dié les Vosges station. This 13 km hiking trail (approx. 5 hrs. with an ascent of 460 m) allows you to discover the charms of the Kemberg massif and its remarkable viewpoints over the course of a day.
To take full advantage of this unspoilt natural environment, take your mountain bike on the marked trails in Saint Dié. The 20 km mountain bike tour of Kemberg (approx. 1h30 and 400 m ascent), starting from Rue des Folmard, follows a forest path. This route offers some very fine viewpoints, particularly at the Kiosque rock. To discover the heights of Saint Dié, take the “ Quatre Bornes ” itinerary by bike. This 42 km circuit is reserved for experienced mountain bikers due to its steep gradient (1100 metres).
Walks and hikes in the Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park
The Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park is a veritable open-air playground. On this vast protected natural area, the whole family can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. Hiking is a popular activity for holidaymakers, who can admire a wide variety of superb landscapes (forests, Vosges villages, castles, rivers and lakes) at their own pace. This natural area boasts six long-distance hiking trails. There are also hiking trails offered by local tourist offices and routes marked by the Club Vosgien, with 7,000 km of trails throughout the park! Whether you’re on your own or accompanied by a guide, the whole family can discover this exceptional region.
During the summer season, the regional park also offers 9 guided tours that combine hiking with discovery of the region’s farm inns. An hour’s drive from the campsite, for example, is the Felsach or Gustiberg farm inns. The farmers and innkeepers will be delighted to welcome you and show you their ancestral know-how. At the same time, try our regional products (cheeses, sauerkraut, charcuterie, etc.).
