Presentation of the ChâteauHaut Koenigsbourg
The initiator of this gigantic construction was Frederick of Hohenstaufen. The château took root illegally on land it did not own. In its early days, the fortress was used to guard the Alsace road from north to south. Later, the Dukes of Lorraine took over the castle. It later became the refuge of a band of brigands and burned down in 1462. Numerous modifications were made, depending on the mood of successive owners. Stormed by the Swedes, it eventually caught fire during the Thirty Years’ War. Abandoned for many years, the château, or what remained of it, was given to the German Kaiser Wilhelm II of Hozenzollerm in 1899. He will restore the fortress to its original appearance, so that it can become a symbol of his empire’s greatness. At the end of the First World War, the château was returned to France. Despite its many restorations, it has retained its charm.
